Among Adams Morgan’s colorful streets and funky shops lies Tryst, a cafe home to warm drinks reminiscent of fall and an array of homey nooks perfect for hunkering down and working on your piled up to-do list.
Unlike Gelbucks or other bustling cafes around Foggy Bottom, Tryst offers a peaceful energy away from the business of campus. With plenty of large leather sofas and soft, warm lighting, I found the cozy cafe the perfect place to spend my Tuesday afternoon answering emails and finishing an essay I had put off.
I chose a table closer to the front of the cafe, next to a wide window that made it an optimal spot for people watching. Labeled as a coffeehouse on their website, the atmosphere lived up to that name, blending the vibe of a relaxed space with a social atmosphere. By day, patrons can sip coffee and work on their laptops at the bar, and by night, transition into a spot for an after-work happy hour, complete with signature cocktails, including an aperol spritz, an extensive wine list and bar snacks.
The interior features dark hardwood floors, paired with wooden tables, multicolored sofas and comfortable leather armchairs, inviting customers to curl up with a book and a hot cup of coffee. With colorful artwork and orange and blue patterned wallpaper, Tryst’s furniture and ambiance feel comparable to a classic American cafe as seen on TV, like the homey atmosphere of Central Perk from “Friends.”
I opted to order from the lunch menu, which is available from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and picked a sandwich called the Bala, featuring mozzarella, pesto and tomato. As someone with celiac, I was pleased to find it was simple to substitute the sandwich’s bread for a delicious gluten free wrap, which only gave Tryst extra points from me.
The warm, light, yet satisfying sandwich perfectly captured the comfort of the cafe. The fresh tomato paired beautifully with the herby pesto sauce, and the soft gluten-free wrap was easily one of the best I’ve had — far superior to the cardboard-like options I often encounter elsewhere. The staff’s attentive service further reinforced Tryst’s relaxing atmosphere, as I felt free to linger over my meal and work on my laptop without servers hovering or rushing me to leave.
Surrounded by the soft hum of conversation and gentle jazz, I found Tryst to be both productive and comfortable, a refreshing contrast to bustling cafes like Tatte where customers often scramble for seats and rely on noise-canceling AirPods to block echoes off the high walls. The cafe also boasts a charming street-side patio, complete with tables shaded by red umbrellas, perfect for sunny days when patrons want to soak up some sun while enjoying their food and drinks.
Tryst is more than a grab-and-go spot — the delicious food and calming decor ensures you’ll stay for hours and enjoy everything this welcoming cafe has to offer.
