GW right-handed pitcher Eric Cantrell was selected by the Kansas City Royals with the fourth pick in the seventh round of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft on Tuesday. Cantrell, a junior, was the 209th pick overall in the 50-round draft.
The Colonial starter was amongst the top pitchers in the Atlantic 10 this past season, earning a spot on the all A-10 First Team after leading the conference in strikeouts with 114. His 3.67 ERA and eight wins were both good enough for third best in the A-10, and his 100.2 innings pitched was the fourth highest total in the conference.
Cantrell’s prolific strikeout total also earned him a spot in the GW record books this past season. His 114 strikeouts is the highest single-season total in Colonials’ history, four more than the previous record of 110.
