Outgoing men’s basketball center Rafael Castro was one of five prospects selected for the AWS NBA Draft Combine from the AWS NBA G League Combine this month.
Castro was one of 44 draft-eligible players to make the G League Combine, which began on May 8, allowing top prospects to showcase their skills for professional scouts. The two-year Revolutionary, who recorded a 7’1.25″ wingspan and a 36.5″ max vertical jump at the G League Combine, is one of four mid-major players to take part in the AWS NBA Draft Combine out of the 73 invites.
In his first scrimmage at the NBA Draft Combine on Wednesday, Castro, as a member of Team Weems, started and played 18:51. He recorded three points on 1/2 shooting from the field and added five rebounds and an assist. Team Weems fell 106-95 to Team Rivers.
Castro, after two years at Providence College, broke out at GW, quickly becoming an anchor for the team and eventually leading them to reach the National Invitation Tournament last season. Throughout his two seasons with the Revs, he established himself as a premier scoring threat and a defensive specialist, earning All-Conference Second Team and All-Defense Team honors twice each.
Last season, he scored in double figures 24 times and notched nine double-doubles. His season high in points, 27, came in the first game of A-10 play against Richmond. He also led the team in points, rebounds, steals and blocks per game while shooting an efficient 62.7% from the field.
Jamaill Hines in a recent article on NoCeilings said Castro could become the seventh consecutive Atlantic 10 player to be selected in the NBA Draft, which takes place on June 23-24.
Head Coach Chris Caputo said in an interview last month that Castro “may very well end up in the NBA.” Many draft experts agree, with ESPN placing him at 97 in their Big Board — the third-highest mid-major player and a spot for a potential undrafted free agent signing.
