Women’s volleyball blocker continues strong freshman campaign

This post was written by contributing sports editor Sean Hurd.

For the second time this season, women’s volleyball freshman Chidima Osuchukwu was recognized as the A-10 Rookie of the week by the Atlantic-10 Conference on Monday.

Osuchukwu was instrumental in her team’s 2-0 weekend.  The middle blocker hit .361 with 16 kills and just three errors in GW’s victories over La Salle and  VCU, an upset not many would have expected. Osuchwuku also recorded 14 blocks (2 solo, 12 assist)  over the two matches and had a season-high 11-rejections in Saturday’s match versus the Rams.

Osuchukwu ranks sixth in the A-10 with 1.18 blocks per set and sixth in hitting percentage at .332. The freshman star leads the Colonials roster in total blocks (80), points (188.5), and is tied for second in kills (138).

Osuchukwu and the rest of the women’s volleyball team returns to action this weekend when they will head to Philadelphia to take on La Salle for the second time. The Colonials will then return home for a Sunday matinee against A-10 newcomer George Mason.
