Tennis weekend wrap-up

Men’s Tennis

The Colonials split their action over the weekend, defeating Atlantic-10 rival Richmond Saturday, but falling to No. 58 VCU Sunday.

GW (6-6) swept the Spiders in doubles matches Saturday, heading into singles play with a point advantage. The Colonials continued their dominant play by sweeping singles matches for the 7-0 victory. Freshman Viktor Svensson’s singles victory was his seventh straight. Additionally, senior Yan Levinski, junior Ugur Atalay, and sophomore Alexander van Gils won their matches in straight sets.

Sunday, freshman doubles duo Ulrik Thomsen and Svensson earned GW’s lone  doubles victory, defeating Svensson’s older brother, VCU’s Filip Svensson and his partner, Jordan Dyke in the No. 3 doubles match. Despite their efforts, VCU ultimately earned the doubles point heading into singles play. Thomsen picked up GW’s only singles victory as the Colonials fell 6-1 to VCU.

GW next travels to Boca Raton, Fla., Sunday, March 13, to take on Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m.

Women’s Tennis

GW suffered its first loss to an Atlantic 10 opponent Saturday, falling 5-2 to Richmond, the team that beat GW in the A-10 championship match last season.

The Colonials (6-2) were swept in doubles play and headed into their singles matches down a point. GW was only able to earn two victories in singles play, with sophomore Mimi Hamling winning in straight sets and freshman Leah Pascarella battling back to win her singles match to earn GW’s only two points.

The Colonials were scheduled to face Morgan State Sunday, but the match was postponed due to rain, and no make-up date has been set. GW next travels to Tampa, Fla, to take on Florida Gulf Coast Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m.
