Women’s basketball bested by Hurricanes

This post was written by Hatchet Staff Writer Elizabeth Traynor

The women’s basketball team extended its losing streak to three consecutive games Tuesday night, falling 83-62 to Miami in its first game following a ten-day break from play.  The loss was also the third time this season that the Colonials (5-7) have been bested by more than 20 points.

The Hurricanes extended their win streak to 11 with the victory over the Colonials. Five players scored in double digits for Miami, including guard Shenise Johnson, who was responsible for 19 of the Hurricanes’ points, and guard Riquina Williams, who added 17.

Offensively for the Colonials, only junior center Sara Mostafa scored in the double figures, putting up 11 points on the night. Sophomore guard Danni Jackson contributed nine points, as did Juniors Tiana Myers and Tara Booker. Booker also grabbed 7 rebounds for the Colonials, also a team-high.

The Colonials shot just 34.4 percent from the free throw line Tuesday night, and only 38.1 percenty from beyond the arc. The Hurricanes shot 49.2 percent from the floor in the win.

At the half, GW was down by seven but had played well after holding Miami to its second smallest first-half point total of the season, but after a 10-0 run by the Hurricanes early in the second half, the Colonials found themselves unable to recover.

GW will look to snap its losing streak in the second game of the Miami Holiday Classic in Coral Gables, Fla., tomorrow night, when the Colonials will take on Morgan State at 7 p.m.
