Five Colonials from three sports win weekly Atlantic 10 awards

Five GW athletes from three different teams earned honors from the Atlantic 10 today for their outstanding play last week.

In women’s lacrosse, sophomore Sarah Phillips won the conference’s player of the week title and junior goalie Liz Hoffman was tabbed the defensive player of the week. Phillips scored five goals on seven shots during GW’s first two home games of the year and also picked up on assist on sophomore Hilary Quinn’s game-winning goal in Wednesday’s win over American. Phillips had 17 saves in that game, tying her career high and the third-highest single-game total in GW history.

Men’s tennis junior Yan Levinski was picked to share the award as the A-10’s top performer after winning the No. 1 singles match by a score of 6-3, 3-6 (11-9) at No. 58 Columbia on Sunday.

The women’s tennis team’s Mimi Hamling and Jacqueline Corba also each won awards. Hamling, a freshman, was named the conference’s top rookie of the week for winning both of her singles and doubles matches in GW’s victories over the University of Pennsylvania and Richmond. Corba, a sophomore captain, won her No. 1 singles match 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 against Richmond and prevailed in the No. 2 doubles match against Penn with freshman partner Dorota Lysienia.
