8:45–After Damian Hollis hit two free throws to bring the Colonials within nine, Richmond’s Jarhon Gidding hit an open three pointer to put the Spiders back up 12 with 4:14 remaining. Richmond is milking the clock every possession, making it difficult for GW to make a run. Still, the Colonials have shown signs of life.
8:41–Diggs just threw down a dunk which can only be described as hellacious and the fans are really back into the game. GW still trails by 11, but they just forced a shot clock violation. 5:40 left.
8:23–Witherspoon is having a good game for GW. He’s hit two threes this half and now had 10 points to lead the Colonials. 39-24.
8:20–GW has gone on a “run” of sorts to open the half, outscoring Richmond 7-3 in the second half. They still trail 37-21. In better news, I heard from a fan that Ed Metz, one of GW’s most loyal fans who has not been to as many games this season due to financial reasons, was given free tickets for the rest of the season by the athletic department. A classy gesture to say the least.
7:53–The half has mercifully ended for GW, who trail 34-14. Redshirt sophomore Travis King leads the team with seven points.
7:37–With 6:30 left in the first half, the score is 23-5 Richmond. That’s all you need to know.
7:29–After a scrap, GW gets another basket after Witherspoon hits a nice double-clutch turnaround off the backboard. Freshman point guard Tony Taylor is really struggling, trying to go baseline multiple times and either stepping out of bounds, getting blocked or just missing the shot.
7:22–GW looks, in a few words, really bad. They have been unable to get any open looks at the basket and have given up a litany of open jumpers and layups to their opponents. 16-3 with 12:00 remaining.
7:16–12-2 Spiders with 15:45 left in the first half. Xavier Alexander has the only GW points.
7:11–Things aren’t looking any better for the Colonials so far. They’re down 6-0 with 17:43 left. Richmond has been getting good looks and when they don’t fall, getting second and third chances. Beleaguered senior forward Wynton Witherspoon is now in the game though.
7:09–Hollis picks up two fouls in 45 seconds. GW looks adverse to attacking the boards and Richmond scores on its third shot after two offensive rebounds. Richmond now up 4-0.
7:06–Taylor, Alexander, King, Hollis and Diggs starting for GW.
7:01–Karl Hobbs just came out from the locker room and, in a break from a tradition dating back at least to my freshman year in 2005, no one bowed in reverence. Considering the team’s recent struggles and his current unpopularity among fans, it’s not really surprising.
