CHARLOTTE, N.C.—The Charlotte 49ers were too kind to the GW men’s basketball team in the first half. The No. 16/18 Colonials were able to use their speed to out-run Charlotte and cause seven turnovers in the Halton Arena to take a 42-29 halftime lead.
Sophomore Maureece Rice has nine points to lead GW while unior Carl Elliott has seven. Senior Pops Mensah-Bonsu has six points and four rebounds to round out a Colonial team that connected on 58.1 percent from the floor in the first half.
De’Angelo Alexander leads all scorers with 11 points on 2-for-3 from beyond the arch. Curtis Withers had six points and equally as many rebounds in 20 minutes of play.
After two scoreless minutes, Mensah-Bonsu put it in from the lane to spark GW’s offense. The 49ers lackadaisical defense allowed GW to take a 13-3 run early in the half.
