Director of Campus Living Dan Wright will leave the University later this month to join the housing office at the University of Michigan. 

Wright, who served as the director for Campus Living since October 2022 and previously held various positions within Campus Living and Residential Education, will leave after more than a decade at GW to join the University of Michigan’s housing office, University spokesperson Julia Metjian confirmed in an email. Officials posted a job listing for the role last Wednesday, listing the position’s qualifications as a bachelor’s degree and 10 years of relevant experience or a master’s degree and 8 years of experience. 

Wright came to GW as an undergraduate student in 2009 and joined the University’s staff in September 2013 after graduating with a bachelor’s in geography earlier that year, according to his LinkedIn. Before holding the position of Campus Living director, Wright served as a CLRE assistant director from January 2021 to October 2022, an area coordinator from July 2018 to January 2021 and an audiovisual supervisor from September 2013 to January 2021. Wright also earned a master’s in higher education administration from the University in 2013. 

“I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to call GW and Washington, DC home since I was 18 years old,” Wright said in a LinkedIn post announcing his departure. “My choice to come GW for college, and every choice along the way to stay (and grow) has altered the course of my life in ways that I probably couldn’t have fathomed when I was 18.”

During Wright’s tenure as Campus Living director, CLRE dropped the on-campus housing requirement for juniors, introduced LGBTQ+ inclusive housing, designated seven residence halls as sophomore-only and added the option for room renewal. 

“To everyone who helped me in some way or another these past 15 years, thank you for everything you’ve done to lend a hand in my growth as a human and as a higher education professional,” Wright said in the LinkedIn post. 

Officials hired Kyle Johnson in March as the director of residential education — the co-leading position of CLRE — according to Johnson’s LinkedIn. The role had been vacant for more than a year, according to CLRE website archives. Johnson previously held roles in housing departments at American and Georgetown universities and the University of Indianapolis, per his LinkedIn.
