The men’s tennis program, which grabbed the Atlantic 10 title last season, was picked to once again win the championship, the league’s head coaches voted today.
The 2011 A-10 title was GW’s second-ever, and it’s first since 1979. The Colonials went on to enter in the NCAA tournament before falling in the first round to Duke.
Head coach Greg Munoz also earned A-10 Coach of the Year honors for the 2011 season.
This season, GW returns three of its league-best six All-Conference picks from last year. Senior Ugur Atalay, who earned first-team honors last season, posted a 6-12 record at No. 1 singles in spring dual action, also registering an 11-9 record at No. 1 doubles with teammate Erik Hannah. Second-team selection junior Alexander van Gils went 11-9 in singles play during the 2011 campaign, and fellow second-team honoree sophomore Viktor Svensson earned a 15-3 record at No. 6 singles, including a streak of nine consecutive victories.
The Colonials’ spring 2012 conference action kicks off Feb. 5 at Temple.
