Women’s tennis defeats West Virginia

The work the GW women’s tennis team is putting in on its new courts at the Mount Vernon Campus paid off this weekend with a 5-1 win over West Virginia Saturday in Pittsburgh.

The Colonials won two of three doubles matches. Junior Tracy Wei and sophomore Lindy First won No.1 doubles against West Virginia’s Underwood and Binder, 8-4. At No.2, GW’s Katarina Stastny (Sr.) and Nazli Gencsoy (So.) suffered an 8-4 loss, while freshman Natasha Bode and junior Samantha came back from a 5-0 score at No.3 doubles to win 8-6.

“The momentum from that comeback translated into our singles matches,” said GW head coach Helen Andrews.

At singles, First dominated WVU’s Watkins at No. 1 with scores 7-5, 6-1, Wei defeated Maia Binder at No. 2 by 6-4, 6-1, and Bode maintained the momentum with a 6-2 and 6-1 win over Gretchen Unger.

The Colonials next host Fordham Sunday.
