Saint Francis College notched a pair of second half goals en route to a 2-0 shutout of the GW men’s soccer team Monday afternoon in Loretto, Penn.

It was the Colonials second consecutive road loss in a game originally scheduled for Sept 12 at the Mount Vernon field. The game had been delayed following last week’s terrorist attacks, and the fields were swapped at the agreement of both head coaches.

Red Flash senior Frank Ianni broke a scoreless tie early in the second half when he beat GW goalkeeper Nick Parypinski from eight yards out.

Ianni worked his way towards the middle of the field and received a pass in front of the net from St. Francis goalkeeper Joe Alianiello. At the 49th-minute, he beat Parypinski to give the Red Flash (1-4-1) a 1-0 lead.

Emanuel Iorianni gave the Red Flash an insurance goal 15 minutes later on a direct kick from 15 yards out.

The Colonials (2-2) were unable to convert any of their 11 shots as Alianiello made six saves.

The Colonials played a rough and aggressive game against a more reserved Red Flash team. Earlier this season, head coach George Lidster said his team would have to adapt their style of play to a faster game.

The team responded with 24 fouls, 10 more than St. Francis. Sophomore Sean Ross committed a yellow card foul in the 89th minute.

Conference play begins in less than a week, which means the Colonials have just one match to re-group from two shutout losses.

On Sunday, the Colonials will host Radford University and on Sept 29 they host the University of Richmond to open conference play.

The Spiders are the latest addition to the Atlantic 10 Conference and are on two-game winning streak following victories against North Carolina State and George Mason. Their only loss was to men’s soccer powerhouse, Duke University.

Radford (1-3) enters Sunday afternoon’s game at Mount Vernon having lost their last match to Davidson University 4-1.

After opening the season with a convincing 9-1 victory over Howard, GW’s offense has been hot and cold.

While the Colonials have been shut out in both losses this season, they have scored a total of 14 goals in their two victories. Senior Matt Pilkington is tied for the scoring lead in the A-10 (five goals). Junior Matthew Osborne has three goals and two assists this season.
