A woman died after a driver struck her while she was using a crosswalk at the intersection of 23rd and L streets Saturday morning, a Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson said.
D.C. Fire and Emergency Services and Second District MPD officers responded to a report of a crash at about 11:13 a.m. and arrived on site to find an adult female with critical injuries. Officers rushed the woman to the hospital, where personnel pronounced her dead after lifesaving measures failed, per the MPD spokesperson.
MPD identified the woman in a release Sunday as 61-year-old Dawn Ciccone.
The release states a 2026 Jeep Wrangler was traveling southbound on the 1100 block of 23rd Street Northwest before using the middle lane to turn left onto L Street, striking the woman who was walking in the crosswalk. The Jeep then fled the scene, per the release.
Officers closed the intersection to vehicles and pedestrians using police tape and vehicles to collect evidence and investigate the scene following the crash, officers at the site said. Officers maintained pedestrian access to the nearby West End Library during the closure and reopened the intersection at about 1:30 p.m.
