Officials armed an additional five GW Police Department officers Monday.

University President Ellen Granberg announced at a Faculty Senate meeting Friday that five officers had completed their trainings and would be armed Monday, bringing the total number of armed officers to seven after the department armed its top two officers in late August. The move marks the second phase of the University’s implementation plan to arm 22 supervisory officers, which it first announced in May.

GW completed phase one of its plan after arming GWPD Chief James Tate and Captain Gabe Mullinax in late August, but the officials paused the continuation of the plan after faculty senators passed a resolution in October asking officials to publicize data and community feedback on the decision to arm officers before proceeding. The University initially stated it would arm four additional officers by the end of September. University spokesperson Julia Metjian declined to say whether officials paused the arming process because of the resolution.

Officials will begin accepting nominations for the GW Safety Advisory Committee — which was mentioned in the initial plan — by March 1, according to a University release. The release states that the committee will include students, faculty and staff, and should be formed by April.

Metjian deferred to the release, the implementation website and the summary of feedback officials released before faculty senators asked for more detail on the reasons behind the arming decision. Metjian declined to say whether officials released community feedback as the resolution stated. She also declined to state what feedback, if any, the interim review committee, which formed before any officers were armed, has given on the arming decision.
