Wolf Blitzer: ‘I’m smelling NCAA’ Tournament for GW

The man who runs “The Situation Room” is feeling pretty good about the men’s basketball team’s success lately.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer told The Hatchet after Tuesday night’s win over VCU that the Colonials are for real this season.

“I’ve been going to these games for a long time,” Blitzer said outside the Smith Center. “They’re very good. I’m smelling NCAA.”

GW impressed most of its fans tonight. The Colonials (14-3) featured multiple defensive half-court pressures, forcing the Rams to a 36.8 percent shooting clip from the field on a night where sophomore Patricio Garino showed his NBA prospects. He finished with 25 points, knocking down 8 of 14 shots, and added two assists, one block and three steals in 28 minutes of action off the bench.

Besides Blitzer, Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., was also in the Smith Center crowd. GW also honored Notre Dame men’s basketball head coach and alumnus Mike Brey at halftime.

The student section was standing room only, as the Colonial Army led fans in anti-VCU taunts like “safety school.”

It was a far cry from last year, when GW was near the bottom of the Atlantic 10 in attendance.
