Three women’s basketball players will participate in a series of half-court basketball games tomorrow at the Department of the Interior’s gymnasium, designed to celebrate the anniversary of Title IX.
Graduate student forward Tara Booker, senior forward Megan Nipe and graduate student forward Brooke Wilson will all play in the competition, and as head coach Jonathan Tsipis and assistant director of athletics communications Jessica Bernheim are scheduled to attend. The Colonials will join members of the Georgetown and Howard women’s basketball programs, as well as WNBA players.
Government officials will also take to the court, including Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. The games are set to commemorate the passage of Title IX legislation 40 years ago, a bill that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in all education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.
The bill was signed into law by President Richard Nixon June 23, 1972.
