The women’s tennis program, which finished fourth in the league last season, was picked to nab the third place slot in the Atlantic 10 by a vote of the league’s head coaches today.

The Colonials, lead by head coach Dawn Buth, return five starters from last year, including three returning All-Conference picks: first-team recipient senior Jacqueline Corba and second-team selections sophomores Julia Blakeley and Leah Pascarella.

Corba is GW’s top singles player and during league action last year, she posted a 9-7 mark on the number-one court, also earning a 7-6 record at No. 3 doubles with teammate Jennifer Hirsh. GW welcomed Andrea Giraldo, a new assistant coach, in October, and wrapped its fall 2011 tournament schedule at the ITA Regionals.

Richmond was picked to claim its fourth-straight Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Tennis Championship in 2012, and Temple, which finished third last season, was picked just ahead of the Colonials at second. The single-elimination 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Tennis Championship will be held April 19 to April 22 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

GW opens league play Feb. 18 against Xavier.
