J. Dallas Shirley (’35)
J. Dallas Shirley joins Red Auerbach as the only Colonials inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Shirley played three years of basketball at GW, but it was as a referee that he made his biggest mark on the game. He worked everything from the inaugural season of the NBA to the ’60 and ’64 Olympics.
For many years he was a junior high principal in D.C. He also served as head of officiating for the Southern Conference.
Shirley was also chairman of the GW Athletic Hall of Fame induction committee and active with the alumni association. He himself was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 1967.
Also worth noting: Ronnie Nunn (’72) – Played three years with the Colonials and is now an NBA official.
