GW had lost all three of its previous second-round games under Coach Joe McKeown, and with under five minutes left, and No. 5 seed Drake University leading No. 4 seed GW 78-61 at the Smith Center, the 1995 NCAA Tournament looked like more of the same.
But out of nowhere, GW staged an unbelievable rally that will long be remembered by those who saw it. And the comeback didn’t even take all of regulation as GW actually took an 83-82 lead with 27 seconds remaining. Drake hit two free throws with less than a second left to send the game to overtime, but the Colonials outscored Drake 12-9 in the extra session to advance to their first Sweet 16.
