The GW women’s water polo team sank host Maryland 7-3 Sunday to garner its first-ever win as a varsity team.
Juniors Andrea Philpot and Heather Walenga and freshman Juli Marhefka each scored two goals apiece for the Colonials, who took revenge after losing to the Terrapins 11-10 in their inaugural match last Sunday at the Smith Center.
GW jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage after the first quarter, controlling the tempo throughout the match.
Freshman Kiersten Johnson also scored a goal for the Colonials.
It was a real good team effort, said GW head coach Scott Reed. We really stepped up on the defensive end.
The Colonials will put their first one-game winning streak on the line at the Princeton Invitational March 4-5.
It’s going to be a very tough weekend – we can’t rest on this win, Reed said. It will be a true test to see exactly where we are.
