Women’s basketball loses seventh straight

The GW women’s basketball team’s slide continued this evening, as the Colonials fell behind after giving up a first-half run at George Mason and were unable to come back, losing 63-53 to push their losing streak to seven games.

The Colonials (2-7), who had Sunday’s game against Mount St. Mary’s canceled due to heavy snowfall, struggled from the field in the game, shooting just 36.4 percent overall and making only three of 14 three-point attempts. The Patriots, on the other hand, shot just over 44 percent from the floor and dominated the boards, out-rebounding GW by a 41 to 28 margin.

Sophomore Tiana Myers led the Colonials’ offense with 14 points, including perfect shooting on six free throws, while freshman Megan Nipe chipped in 11. Redshirt freshman Brooke Wilson had a team-high nine rebounds and freshman Janine Davis had six assists versus just one turnover.

The Colonials, already one of the youngest teams in the country, have been hit with a number of injuries that have likely contributed to their struggles. Davis has been starting recently in place of injured freshman Danni Jackson, who broke her leg during the team’s two-game trip to the Bahamas over Thanksgiving weekend. Redshirt junior Ivy Abiona, the team’s lone upperclassman, has yet to return from the knee surgery she underwent over the summer.

Next for GW is a four-game homestand beginning with Western Kentucky Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. Six of the Colonials’ seven losses have come away from the Smith Center, where they have hosted just two games so far this season.
