The basketball preview is the most important issue of the year for the sports section. It is, I would imagine, our most-read product in any given year and also our longest. Not only does the increased space afford us more room for stories, but the increased stories afford us more depth in our coverage and allow us to cover aspects of GW’s men’s and women’s basketball teams that are often unreported during the grind of a season.

In today’s edition, I hope to have set a tone for our coverage of the teams this season based on two points: processes and people. With both teams in the process of trying to build themselves back up, focusing solely on outcomes would be misrepresentative of “the story” of each team’s seasons. The means, in these circumstances, are just as important as the ends.

As far as the “people” aspect, we hope that our coverage has helped our audience become more familiar with the Colonials themselves. There are roughly two-dozen members of the two teams, not to mention a full coaching staff, and with each person comes any number of possible stories. Hopefully this issue is only the beginning of telling them.
