Former UVa. standout named men’s tennis assistant coach

Former professional tennis player Philippe Oudshoorn will join the men’s tennis program as an assistant coach this season, head coach Greg Munoz announced Tuesday.

Oudshoorn comes to GW after a year playing professionally in the Netherlands and serving as an instructor at the Big Point Tennis Academy. In addition to coaching, Oudshoorn will pursue a master’s degree at GW.

“I am very excited to welcome Philippe and have him on board as we keep pushing GW men’s tennis to new heights,” Munoz said in a press release. “He brings experience from the No. 1 team in the country where he was a team captain, and his leadership skills and ability to relate to players will help us bring out the very best in this team.”

While competing on the Future and Challenger tours in the Netherlands, Oudshoorn notcged a Association of Tennis Professionals ranking of 1,398 in singles competition and  1,263 in doubles.

“I am very excited to start working with such an excellent team. Coach Munoz has done a great job improving the team’s standards every year and I am thrilled to contribute so this program can reach new levels of success,” Oudshoorn said. “We have a great group of student-athletes who have a professional attitude and look to improve every day.”

Oudshoorn competed for Virginia’s tennis team during his undergrad years from 2009-12. In his four years, he racked up a singles record of 44-17 and a doubles record of 33-10, ranking as high as No. 102 in the nation in singles and No. 14 in doubles.

The Cavaliers experienced consistent success with Oudshoorn on the roster, winning three team ITA National Indoor titles, three ACC crowns, and making two NCAA Tournament finals appearances.

The men’s tennis team finished last season with a 17-7 (4-1) overall record, earning a No.73 ranking by year’s end after going 4-5 against top-75 teams.
