The Board of Trustees has yet to make a decision on the potential renaming of the Colonials moniker.
University President Thomas LeBlanc said in January that he expected the Special Committee on the Colonials Moniker to finalize its renaming recommendations by the end of the past academic year, but University spokesperson Crystal Nosal declined to say if the committee met the target. The University renamed the Cloyd Heck Marvin Center – with recommendations also targeted for the spring – as the University Student Center late last month, but officials have yet to share any updates on the status of the Colonials moniker name.
Nosal said officials will discuss the status of the moniker once the Board reviews the recommendations from the committee formed last year to study the Colonials name and consider changing it. Nosal declined to say whether the Board has received the committee’s recommendations.
Nosal also said that officials are not considering any other names for the University Student Center.
“GW officials went through a comprehensive process to select a new name for the University Student Center; no other names are under consideration at this time or in the near future,” she said in an email.
Officials have previously said they would consider six other renaming requests – for Fulbright, Madison, Monroe and Francis Scott Key halls, The Churchill Center and the William P. Barr Dean’s Suite – after making a decision on the Colonials moniker renaming request.
The Board’s next regularly scheduled meeting will take place in October a week after Family and Alumni Weekend – formerly titled Colonials Weekend – which will be held in conjunction with the closing celebration for GW’s bicentennial. Nosal declined to say when the Board could reach a decision on the Colonials moniker.
