Officials and student leaders have suspended fraternity recruitment for the fall semester, reversing a recent expansion of the recruitment process that expanded participation to first-year students.
Officials from the Division for Student Affairs’ Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life said in an email announcing the decision to members of the Interfraternity Council community Thursday and obtained by The Hatchet the move was made jointly with the IFC Executive Board to give chapters more time to focus on leadership development, chapter operations and community building rather than the demands of formal recruitment. The move to cancel the fall recruitment process comes just a year after the IFC reopened the process to all students regardless of how many credits they had received, allowing first-year students to join one of the IFC’s eight fraternities that opened recruitment in the fall for the first time since 2021.
“By pausing that operational pressure, we aim to redirect our collective focus toward strengthening chapter operations and the IFC community, enhancing leadership development, and reinforcing organizational values and expectations,” the email states.
Officials said in the email that they’ve had “challenging and candid conversations” with members and leaders of the IFC about issues currently facing the group like community engagement, member recruitment and retention and conduct.
Instead of conducting formal recruitment in the fall, IFC and FSL will focus on engagement and educational programming to introduce prospective members to the FSL community, according to the email. The email states that formal recruitment will return in the spring semester after IFC chapters have had “dedicated time” to prepare and strengthen their organizations.
“While we have seen progress in several areas, we believe that additional support, intentional community development, and the collective effort of every chapter and member are necessary to create a sustainable, flourishing environment for the future of the IFC,” officials said.
A University spokesperson and the IFC did not return a request for comment.
Officials last fall removed the 12-credit recruitment eligibility policy, allowing first-years to rush in the fall for the first time since fall 2017. FSL temporarily introduced fall recruitment in fall 2021 after the pandemic to help students better acclimate to campus social life following a year of social isolation, before the 12-credit restriction was then reinstated the following year to encourage students to familiarize themselves with campus life before recruitment.
Last fall, IFC chapters extended 75 bids during the formal recruitment cycle, the highest number since fall 2021, when chapters offered 121 bids to potential new members. Trex Jones, the 2025-2026 IFC president, said in August the group’s move to expand fall recruitment access was intended to heighten interest in Greek life on campus and offer first-year students more opportunities to fit the rush process into their schedules.
