The Hatchet’s staff elected sophomore Sarah Roach as the next editor in chief Saturday.

Roach, a journalism major, will head the paper’s 116th volume, which begins in May.

The Danvers, Mass. native currently serves as an assistant news editor at The Hatchet. She has previously worked as a research assistant for the paper.

Roach currently leads coverage of student life, which has included reporting on widespread Adderall use on campus and chronicling complaints from students about the University’s alcohol policies.

One year after a racist Snapchat post was circulated on campus, Roach led coverage of a story that looked at how the University has changed in the time since the incident.

While covering the Student Association, she followed a contentious SA Senate vote on a measure that urged the University to divest from companies supporters said contribute to Palestinian suffering.

When she is not in the townhouse, Roach can be found walking dogs around campus, going on walks or gardening.

Roach will also take over as president of Hatchet Publications, Inc., pending approval by The Hatchet’s Board of Directors.

The Hatchet is an editorially and financially independent student newspaper serving the GW and Foggy Bottom community. It is the second-oldest D.C. newspaper after The Washington Post.
