It has been a busy year in Foggy Bottom.
We covered a racist Snapchat post that rocked campus and launched a yearlong conversation about race that resulted in new diversity training for all incoming students. Plus, The Hatchet was there as graduate students continued to lobby for a union and when the Student Association made GW one of few schools across the country to pass a controversial pro-Palestinian divestment resolution.
The summer didn’t slow The Hatchet down. Our editors took the streets to cover the second “Unite the Right” rally that marched through the center of campus and counterprotests that erupted around the city.
Our sports editors have been stationed on the sidelines all year and covered controversy in the athletic department as its former leader faced accusations of misconduct and several individuals in the department were named in a racial discrimination lawsuit.
Through it all, our editorial board has weighed in on topics like the Colonial Health Center’s lack of a permanent leader and the University’s silence on the athletic department scandal.
The Hatchet’s work was celebrated this year. We were named one of the best college newspapers in the country with the Associated Collegiate Press’ online Pacemaker award and picked up a third place award for photo of the year. Staff members also won three awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for reporting, editorial writing and photography.
We have provided in-depth coverage of GW and the District for 115 years and cultivated talented alumni who have impressive careers around the globe. As small local outlets and even national publications face challenges, independent student journalism is more important than ever before. To continue informing our dedicated readers, we need your help.
If you care about the GW community and the award-winning work we do, please consider supporting student journalism with a tax-deductible donation this holiday season. You can make a donation here.
As an entirely independent, nonprofit organization, we receive no funding from GW and rely completely on advertising revenue and reader donations to continue the work we do. All donations, large or small, make a difference.
Thank you for your continued support from all of us at The GW Hatchet.
