Last year senior Jeff Mnich wrote a column called “Spicing up The Hatchet” suggesting that we should make some of our content less serious and less political, because we are, after all, still a campus newspaper. The Life section is one of the few sections that has the leeway to take Jeff’s comments and run with them because it’s a section that can be more creative and less newsy. This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot this year as the new features editor.
Some of you may have noticed a few new things in the Life section so far this year – last week we ran a new feature called “GW Blind Date,” where we set up two students, paid for them to have dinner and interviewed them afterwards about their experience. In today’s issue you may have noticed another new regular column we started called “Weekly check up” where we discuss health issues you may not know about that affect students. We’ve also started printing a box every week telling you guys interesting facts that have happened on that day. And we are accepting samples for a sex columnist and hope to have something for print next Monday.
I started all of these to try and entertain you guys and give you something lighter and more fun to read about than the typical news.
But I want your feedback – do you like these changes? What do you think about spicing up The Hatchet? Any suggestions for other ways to keep the content on the Life page interesting and fun? I’m all ears…
