SA Note: SA approves committee leaders

The Student Association senate-elect approved four students to lead committees of next year’s senate Tuesday night at the new body’s first meeting.

The senate-elect approved Sens. Nick Polk (non-voting) as the rules committee chair; Julie Bindelglass (CCAS-U) as the finance committee chair; Michelle Tanney (CPS) as the student life committee chair; Senator-elect Louis Laverone (ESIA-U) as the academic affairs committee chair; and Senator-elect Chris Headquist (SoB-G) as the graduate student affairs committee chair.

Bindelglass, a freshman, said she plans to follow the allocation plan of finance chair and Sen. Matt Cohen (SoB-U). She said she hopes to streamline the process student organizations must follow to obtain student funds.

“I am very glad that everyone is giving me the ability to use my experience and take the great work that was done this year and push it to a new level (next year),” Bindelglass said. “I really want to make next year’s finance process easier for student organizations.”

Polk, a freshman, said he would begin talking to president-elect Vishal Aswani’s cabinet appointees, which must be approved by his committee before they can take their seats in the executive.

“(I want to) make sure people aren’t here for a résumé booster but here to make a mark and make a change,” Polk said.

Tanney, a graduate student, said she is excited to work for the life committee.

“I am very excited,” Tanne y said. “I feel I bring a unique perspective to this position having been both an undergraduate and a graduate (at GW). I am looking forward to next year.”

Laverone, a sophomore, said he will focus on improving the language department and making sure Square 54, the site of the old GW Hospital, will have classrooms for students.

“When I ran as a representative for the Elliott School, my main goal was to strengthen the language program here at GW,” Laverone said.

He added, “I want to make sure there is enough student space.”

Headquist, a graduate student, said the two most important issues he will work on next year are graduate involvement in campus activities and cooperation between organizations in each graduate school.

“I want to get all the grads on the same page,” Headquist said.

The senate-elect will meet again April 15 and will be sworn in May 1.
