Protesters respond

I read The Hatchet’s Oct. 7 editorial, “Gaining No Ground,” (p. 4) and much of it made a great deal of sense. But your readers need to know several facts:

1. The 65-foot loading dock is planned for 24th Street, not New Hampshire Avenue. If it were to be located on New Hampshire, at least it would be adjacent to GW property, not across from residences, and on a wider street. Since both streets are heavily impacted with traffic, the trucks in and out of the dock would still be disruptive.

2. The D.C. government has already ruled out moving the loading dock to 23rd Street, where the tractor-trailers and other trucks would disrupt even more traffic.

3. At the demonstration, only one protester yelled at groundbreaking participants. The remainder of the resident protesters were well-behaved. The Foggy Bottom community would welcome the opportunity to enter into discussions with the hospital and the University; let us hope there will be a chance to do so.
