Another week, another freshman stepping up for the women’s soccer team.

Freshman Lina Proska’s two goals was all the scoring the Colonials needed to seal a 2-1 win, and even up their season record at 2-2 Friday in Norfolk, Va. Proska scored in each half – first in the 28th minute and again in the 57th minute, for her first career goals as a Colonial.

Coming off back-to-back losses last weekend against Georgetown and Saint Francis, the Colonials needed to bounce back on both sides of the ball. GW almost doubled Old Dominion’s shot total, holding a 14-8 advantage and limiting the Monarch’s to only two shots on goal for the night.

Proska’s first strike came on an effortless assist from senior fielder Alex Neal, who sent the ball to the middle of the field, setting up Proska, who beat the ODU keeper on a slow roll into the net.

In the second half, GW looked to maintain it’s aggressive play, and there was Proska to answer the call. Off a pass from freshman MacKenzie Cowley, who has led the offense thus far this season, Proska maneuvered around the Monarch’s goalie to put GW up 2-0.

However, just 11 minutes later, ODU’s Devin Dougherty dribbled up the field and put one past senior goalkeeper Nicole Ulrick, who had one save on the day.

From there on, GW’s defense retained its focus and left the Monarchs scoreless the rest of the half, securing the 2-1 victory.

The team heads to face off against East Carolina on Sunday, looking for continued strong play from the young rookies.
