Montrell’s status

Great news about the ranking, but I think I speak for all GW fans when I say “What’s up with Montrell???” I know Hobbs won’t comment on why he’s suspended and not all the information is available to you, but please, try to dig deep on this thing. There are already rumors that he’s transferring to another school. If it’s that bad, this is the type of thing that can really tear apart a team as they move into NCAA Tourney time. Even if you can’t tell us exactly why he’s suspended, can you at least speculate as to how severe this situation is? As sports editors at the Hatchet, I find it hard to believe that you’re completely in the dark on this situation. Thanks for any info you might be able to dig up.

I’m sorry to say, but there is honestly no new information available on Montrell. Even our sources who are usually the most forthcoming about news with GW basketball are remaining tight-lipped.

As the person who first reported that Montrell was not on the team bus to Richmond, I was not exactly surprised at it. During the UMass game, McDonald played poorly and was benched after only a few minutes on the floor. He looked fairly dejected on the sideline.

While some may provide anectdotal evidence about what Montrell said on the bench or how Hobbs greeted him once he got there, the Hatchet cannot report that because it cannot be verified by any of the involved parties. One aspect of Hobbs’ program is that he is very skillful at shielding potential news from the press and making sure his players do not talk about controversial subjects.

If the dispute did stem from a response to playing time, there is precedent. Last year Danilo (J.R.) Pinnock was suspended indefinitely – which only ended up being for one game. This was linked to a dispute during practice.

As soon as we can confirm anything, we’ll be sure to let you know.
