Women’s basketball (3-2) defeated Towson University (0-5) 69-57 at home Wednesday, going 3-0 for home games.
After losing to Ohio University on Saturday, the Revolutionaries returned to the District to start a five-game matchup, taking the home court advantage to get back into the win column. With the Tigers’ 9-5 run to end the third quarter with a 2-point lead, the Revs got the double-digit lead of 10 with 1:27 minutes left in the game to secure the win.
Sophomore forward Sara Lewis led the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds, the first double-double of her career. Graduate student guard Makayla Andrews finished with 16 points, scoring 10 in the first half. Junior guard Filipa Calisto recorded 14 points and seven rebounds, contributing 9 of 14 points for the Revs in the third quarter.
In the first quarter, the teams were at a 16-16 deadlock, trading baskets with each team shooting 7-15 from field goal and finishing 2-6 from the 3-point line. Andrews led the scoring with six points.
The Revs went on a 16-4 in the first six minutes of the second quarter, increasing their lead to 32-20. The Revs shot 50 percent from the field in the second quarter, with freshman guard Gabby Reynolds and graduate student forward Mariona Planes Fortuny leading the run with the two of them scoring five points apiece. The first half ended 36-28.
Lewis said that her team got to run their play to their own offensive beat in the second quarter and were finding open teammates for shots.
“A huge key for us was dictating the pace, making sure we can control the game and then be the more disciplined team, making sure we’re boxing out and crashing the board,” Lewis said.
The third quarter saw the Tigers cut the Revs’ lead to the only two points. The Revs’ seven personal fouls gave the Tigers nine free-throw shots, of which they made five. At the buzzer to end the quarter, the Tigers’ junior guard India Johnston made the shot, bringing the score to 50-48.
The Revs found their defensive game again in the final quarter, allowing only 20 percent from the field, which gave the Revs more offensive opportunity. Three minutes into the quarter, the Tigers hit a 3-pointer, which cut the lead to one with the score of 54-53, but Lewis made a layup to get regain the lead.
Head Coach Caroline McCombs said that her team failed to keep their composure during the third quarter, which led to them letting Towson back into the game. But, she said her team regained their control in the beginning of the fourth quarter and was able to be victorious.
“We just had to maintain our composure,” McCombs said. “I think not to get rattled. Again, just playing together.”
With 1:30 minutes left in the fourth, Calisto drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead back to 10 points as Towson called the timeout. As Towson was hit with their sixth team foul, Andrews hit both free throws with 41 seconds left to secure the win.
The team also improved their free throw shooting in this game, going 83.3 percent. They made 6-7 shots in the fourth quarter. In the loss to Ohio on Saturday, the Revs only made four of 14 free throws, their lowest percentage this season.
“We just had a free throw as one of our homework, so it was something that we were making sure that we had to make at games and practices,” Calisto said.
Lewis collected her 10th rebound, her ninth defensive rebound of the contest, with 19 seconds remaining, ending the game 69-57.
“Just boxing out, having the rebounders mentality, making sure that you have to be aggressive in the paint to get these rebounds,” Lewis said.
The Revs will continue their home-game journey and face Georgia Southern University this Saturday at noon.
