Four transfer students announced their commitment to join men’s basketball this week, solidifying the team’s roster for next year.
Former Hofstra University sophomore guard Jean Aranguren, Western Kentucky University senior forward Tyrone Marshall Jr., Tarleton State University sophomore guard Bubu Benjamin and former Northwestern University redshirt sophomore forward Luke Hunger will all join the Revolutionaries next season. The four players, along with former Duquesne senior guard Tre Dinkins, mark GW’s transfer class after a 21-13 finish last season.
They will join a team with a seven player returning base, including junior forward Rafael Castro, who led the team in points and rebounds last season. The team will also welcome back guard-forward Garrett Johnson, who missed last season due to a torn ACL.
Head Coach Chris Caputo has shown a consistent record of bringing in big men, like Hunger, from power conference programs to strengthen GW’s frontcourt. Caputo recruited Castro from the Big East’s Providence College last offseason, one year after Darren Buchanan Jr. joined the Revs through the transfer portal from Virginia Tech. Both players had breakout years in their first seasons at GW, finishing first and second on the teams in points per game, respectively.
Buchanan entered the transfer portal last month and has subsequently committed to play at Rutgers University. Forwards Hunger and Marshall will look to fill in the gaps left by Buchanan’s departure, after the redshirt sophomore averaged 10.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last season.
Aranguren and Benjamin will help fill the void left by departing guards, including graduate student Gerald Drumgoole Jr. who finished out his college basketball eligibility this season, and sophomore Jacoi Hutchinson who announced his departure to Longwood University last week.
Here’s a look into the Revs’ four newest players:
Jean Aranguren
Arnguren will add to scoring and play making abilities from the guard position when he arrives to Foggy Bottom. The 6-foot-3-inch guard started all 33 games for the Pride last season, averaging 14.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Aranguren ranked second on the team in points per game, rebounds, assists and steals.
The Venezuela native played his first collegiate year at Iona University where he averaged 8.1 points and 1.7 assists per game before transferring to Hofstra prior to the 2024-25 season.
Tyrone Marshall Jr.
Marshall will make the move to the Revs as a graduate transfer after spending the last three seasons with Western Kentucky. The 6-foot-seven-inch forward appeared in all 32 games last season, averaging 10.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.6 blocks in 28.7 minutes per game with the Hilltoppers.
Marshall led the team in rebounds this past season, an attribute the Revs will look to capitalize on after ranking 10th in rebounds per game in the Atlantic 10 last season.
Bubu Benjamin
Benjamin is coming off a productive sophomore campaign with the Texans in 2024-25 season, averaging 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.5 steals, leading his team in scoring. At 6 feet 7 inches tall, Benjamin’s height from the guard position could prove valuable to the Revs as will his 3-point shooting ability, coming in with an impressive 38.0 percent clip from deep.
Luke Hunger
Hunger committed to GW on Friday following his visit last week. The 6-foot-10-inch Canadian big man consistently came off the bench for Northwestern during the 2024-25 season, appearing in 25 games and averaging 2.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game with 38.1 percent shooting from the field.
Hunger during the 2023-24 season played 31 games and started in 10, including Northwestern’s two NCAA Tournament games. He was also part of the first Northwestern team to make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2023 and 2024.
Hunger recorded 6 points, a team-high seven rebounds and two assists in the Wildcats’ NCAA Tournament Second Round game against University of Connecticut in 2024.
