Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki will address the Class of 2024 as this year’s Commencement speaker, officials announced Wednesday.
Psaki, who hosts MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki,” served as President Joe Biden’s press secretary from his 2021 inauguration until May 2022. She previously served under former President Barack Obama as his deputy press secretary in 2008 and deputy communications director in 2009.
Psaki also served as Obama’s press secretary for his 2012 re-election campaign, before becoming a spokesperson for the Department of State in 2013.
“I am honored to be invited to join the Class of 2024 in celebrating their many achievements and time at this historic institution,” Psaki said in a University release. “I look forward to joining the graduates and their loved ones as they enter the next chapter in their lives.”
Psaki will receive an honorary doctorate of public service at the May 19 ceremony.
The speaker announcement is the latest of any in the last decade, the selection coming a little over two weeks before Commencement. The announcement comes after officials said Sunday that GW is committed to Commencement occurring “safely and appropriately” amid pro-Palestinian protests on campus.
“As a respected political commentator, former White House Press Secretary, and champion of truth and ethical public service, Jen Psaki will no doubt be an inspiration to our students,” University President Ellen M. Granberg said in the release. “I am honored that Ms. Psaki will provide the keynote address at Commencement and share her wisdom with this next generation of leaders and change-makers.”
