The Hatchet was recognized for best breaking news photography in a regional collegiate journalism competition Monday.
The Society of Professional Journalists awarded The Hatchet first place in breaking news photography for Margaret Wroblewski’s work documenting a student’s arrest during protests of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the court last summer.

SPJ named The Hatchet a finalist in two other categories – sports photography and editorial writing – last month.
Winners in each category in the region – which includes Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina and D.C. – will compete in a national competition against winners from 12 other regions. Winners from the national competition will be recognized in late spring at the Excellence in Journalism conference in San Antonio.
