The Hatchet is more than an award-winning student newspaper. The Hatchet’s business team is an all-student group who ensures the paper has the revenue it needs to succeed.
We are seeking motivated students with business or entrepreneurial experience for these positions, and are accepting applications immediately. Each role is open to undergraduate students and comes with unique responsibilities and a potential for promotions within the department. Director of Business Development
The Director of Business Development Position is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive internal and external marketing plan that would increase revenues and profits. This position is expected to uphold the mission and values established by the organization. This position manages the team of account representatives, providing guidance and support. This position reports to the business management team.
Duties
– Work 10 hours per week in The Hatchet’s business office
– Weekly meetings with business staff
– Maintain advertising relationships with national advertising agencies
– Develop sales leads and create ad sales incentives for new clients
– Participate with editorial and business staff in refining online content strategies
– Maintain and update media kit and marketing materials
– Significantly broaden local retail advertising relationships with area bars, restaurants, and event organizers
– Oversee the implementation of SalesForce software
– Create and test new sales strategies and pricing formulas for new online and social media advertising products
– Make sales, serving as an account representative
– Demonstrates knowledge of and supports mission, vision, and policies and procedures of the organization
Requirements:
– Current undergraduate student at GW
– Business sales experience
– Marketing experience
– Excellent communications skills
– Ability to think both creatively and strategically
– Strong work ethic and ambition
Salary:
– Base salary plus commission
Account Representatives
Account Representatives generate revenue by developing market potential through forecasting, lead generation, qualification and closing sales, as well as by recommending new products and services. This position reports to the Director of Business Development, as well as the business management team.
Duties:
– Works three hours per week in The Hatchet’s business office
– Pursues new advertising clients for the Hatchet through cold calling or onsite visits
– Meets budgeted goals
– Writes orders
– Collects payment
– Quotes rates
– Writes contracts
– Verifies placement/receipt of ad material
– Trains in SalesForce software
– Demonstrates knowledge of and supports mission, vision, and policies and procedures of the organization
