The Associated Collegiate Press named The GW Hatchet a Pacemaker national finalist in three categories Friday – best overall newspaper, reporter of the year and multimedia story of the year.
The Hatchet is one of 23 non-daily newspapers up for the coveted title of best four-year non-daily newspaper.
The award is given to newspapers with solid coverage, in-depth reporting, sleek designs, strong editorials and attractive visuals.
Cory Weinberg, the Hatchet’s editor in chief, is also in the running to be named the country’s top college journalist. He is one of three finalists from four-year colleges.
Weinberg, who served as campus news editor for the 2012-2013 school year, was recognized for his stories: “The half-billion dollar campus,” “GW under scrutiny for inflated admissions data” and “Law faculty plotted to oust dean.”
The Hatchet’s multimedia feature on DanceWorks is also one of about 30 finalists for the multimedia story of the year. The feature was shot and produced by former senior staff photographer Zach Krahmer.
Winners will be announced at the organization’s October conference.
