Women’s soccer’s offense stays hot, can only earn draw

This post was written by Hatchet staff writer Josh Solomon.

The GW women’s soccer team (2-2-1) outshot East Carolina (2-2-2) 14-7, in the first ever meeting between the teams, but could not come away with the win, leaving with a 1-1 tie in double overtime.

Senior Alex Neal lead the team with six shots, five on goal, including the Colonials lone goal in the 67th minute to tie the game. She took a loose ball inside the box and kicked it just over the Pirates’ goalkeeper. It was her third shot in the game and her first goal on the season, following a three-goal junior-year campaign.

GW went into halftime leading the shot differential 6-1, but in the 54th minute, last year’s Conference USA All-Freshmen Team forward Kendall Frey knocked in the first goal of the game from the near post as she turned from the end line.

In overtime, the Colonials again outshot East Carolina, 5-2, but could not connect. Freshman MacKenzie Cowley made her last attempt in the 109th minute, but the Pirates goalie came up with one of her eight saves. GW senior goalie Nicole Ulrick had three saves on the day.

The Colonials attempted their final corner kick with 16 seconds to play in double overtime, but nothing came of it. They lead the Pirates 12-5 in corner kicks.

The Colonials will go onto play William & Mary on Thursday. It will be their third game of the four road game swing.
