Former men’s basketball coach Karl Hobbs will move up the bench at UConn in the coming season, transitioning from the Huskies’ Director of Basketball Administration to a full-time assistant coach position.

Hobbs was hired at UConn in July 2011, after he was fired as the Colonials’ head coach following a decade-long stint at the helm of the GW program. Hobbs, a UConn alumnus, previously worked as an assistant coach for the Huskies from 1993 to 2001, and his staff at GW featured UConn ties, including the hire of Donyell Marshall as an assistant coach.

Hobbs’ tenure at GW was a series of highs and lows for the men’s basketball program,  when Colonials finished with losing records in both of Hobbs’ first two seasons, but began a surge to the top of the conference in his third season with a trip to the NIT in 2004. The team made the NCAA Tournament three consecutive times in 2005, 2006 and 2007 before falling on hard times, finishing in 13th place in the 14 team Atlantic 10 in 2008 and 2009.

His move to an assistant role isn’t the only change in UConn’s coaching roster for the upcoming season. Longtime head coach Jim Calhoun retired earlier this year, paving the way for former assistant Kevin Ollie to assume the head coaching slot, and Glen Miller will become the Huskies’ Associate Head Coach.
