Berhanu nabs national accolades

Senior midfielder Yoni Berhanu, who yesterday earned recognition as the Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Midfielder of the Year and A-10 Player of the Week, grabbed two more honors Thursday, when he was named the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week and to the Soccer America Men’s National Team of the Week.

It’s the second National Team of the Week accolade for the Colonials, after junior midfielder Zach Abaie was named to the Soccer America Team for the Week in October.

Berhanu leads the conference with 10 goals, and was the biggest offensive catalyst during the Colonials regular season championship-clinching weekend, when he netted three goals, including a pair of game-winners. Against St. Bonaventure, Berhanu converted the game-winning penalty kick in the first half and a rebound off his own saved spot attempt in the second half to lift GW to a 3-0 victory. In Sunday’s match against Duquesne, Berhanu netted a 25-yard free kick to secure the sole goal in the Colonials’ 1-0 victory.

Berhanu’s play helped earn GW to a bid in the A-10 tournament and a bye through the first round. He and the Colonials departed for St. Louis yesterday, and have a bye through the first round of play. They’ll face the highest remaining seeded team from Thursday’s quarterfinal action in the semifinal round at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
