The National Capital Planning Commission is considering five plans to redesign the Ellipse and a portion of E Street – two locations bordering the White House – that currently sport a series of unattractive concrete security barriers.
The E Street-area between the Ellipse and White House has served as protest ground in the past, but has recently been closed to pedestrians.
Some plans include moving the street’s security houses away from their current locations to relieve the traffic congestion spilling onto 15th and 17th streets.
In addition to offering landscaping detail like shrubbery and groves, some of the design plans suggest removing the surrounding parking areas and replacing them with more discreet underground parking facilities. New biking and walking lanes were also drawn up in a number of plans.
The winning design will be chosen by June 30.
