Journalists fundamentally don’t like happy stories. In fact, if fists aren’t flying it can be difficult to get any press on an event. But sometimes it’s fitting to give some credit where credit is due, and today I think some credit is due to some different groups around campus.
Despite the paralysis gripping student government this past semester, this pre-exam period has seen some successes. On Tuesday I woke up groggy and in a bit of self inflicted pain. But this wasn’t due to me celebrating the last day of classes (damn you Tuesday make up day!) but rather I was feeling the sheer amount of free food I had eaten the night before at Midnight Breakfast.
Those who attended will probably agree that Midnight Breakfast ran incredibly smoothly. I got there and was eating within five minutes, an improvement over last year when J Street seemed a little overwhelmed. On top of that, the food was better. Still not gourmet, but the price was right. A final good move came from President Knapp himself. Showing up and MCing a food eating contest is a step forward on increasing his visibility on campus. This overall was a success for the Student Activities Center and the other organizations that contributed.
More study space has been another definite improvement this semester. The opening of 2145 G St. or “Fishbowl” as many call it is the most notable addition by SAC and Student & Academic Support Services. Besides that, for this critical exam period, the University has enacted some good policies to help students take on the extra load. For example, the request for noisy construction to be completed outside of Fulbright before exams begin was good news from Facilities Project Management.
So in a rare moment of praise from a columnist, I say good job to SAC, SASS and FPM for easing exam time for students. Let’s keep it up.
