After receiving the names of GW students alleged to be illegally downloading music, the Recording Industry Association of America dismissed the anonymous lawsuit against them yesterday, according to court documents.
The recording industry had subpoenaed the University to give up the names of 19 students identified by their IP addresses. After eliminating from the list a few duplicate names and those students who had agreed to settlements, GW complied with the court order and handed over the names of nine students to the recording industry on May 12, said University spokesperson Michelle Sherrard.
Spokesperson for the RIAA, Liz Kennedy, said it is normal procedure for the recording industry to drop the anonymous lawsuit after students’ names are received. She said these students will be given another chance to agree to a settlement, although it will not be as reduced as the one they were offered before the lawsuit. If they do not settle in an indicated period of time- likely 10 to 20 days-the RIAA can sue again on the same charges, but this time using their names rather than John Doe.
