Men’s Basketball Roundup

I talked with Jack Kvancz, GW’s Director of Athletics, for more than an hour yesterday. A full article on scheduling will come sometime during the week, but I just wanted to get a few things out:

Jermaine Middleton has left GW and subsequently its basketball team. Kvancz said Middleton wanted to play more and did not see himself getting time with the Colonials. Kvancz thinks Middleton went to Clark University, a Division III school in Massachusetts, but isn’t sure. As has been heavily rumored, Joseph Katuka, a 6’10 poward forward from Florida, will be on the team next year.

Katuka’s signing leaves one scholarship for next year. Kvancz said he is not sure if GW has been cleared to talk to Nigel Munson, a sophomore guard from Virginia Tech who grew up in the District, but says he is skeptical of any player who has not found a team to play for at this late date because there is likely a good reason. Obviously, he said, this is not always the case, but it often is. If no one worth spending a scholarship on comes along, then GW will just use the scholarship on a freshman next year.

As far as scheduling is concerned, Kvancz said he has a hard time getting good teams to visit the Smith Center, for the same reasons as always, which I will discuss in the upcoming article. Right now, home games include games against Boston University, Longwood and more of the “usual suspects,” as he put it. A full schedule will not likely be released until a little before Labor Day.

I hope everyone’s summer is going well; basketball season is just four months away.
