The opinions section is inherently different from every other section of the newspaper in that it is multilayered. An opinions writer sometimes reports the news, but always analyzes it and then makes a policy prescription. All this in about 650 words. Its not an easy task. Plus, the opinions writer must put themself on the line with each and every word. Their pieces don’t reflect the comments or opinions of others, they don’t simply say “what’s happening.” Rather, they say what the author thinks should happen.
All this, and and writer must be knowledgeable in campus politics (not the SA – administrators, current news and prevailing student opinion).
It’s not easy, and thus, it’s often not easy to find great opinions writers.
With that said, I would encourage everyone who thinks they have what it takes to email me: [email protected]
