“For the photo editor: Why did you put the picture of the kid lifting the tire below the fold on the front page of Monday’s paper? I felt that it was a lot stronger of a photo than the one of the Navy flag-bearers, and that it should have gone above the fold. Thanks.”
From photo editor Sam Sherraden:
Let me begin by thanking you for the first post directed toward the photo department. I have felt a bit lonely. I thought the photo of the weight lifting was more emotive, but lacked creative composition. The expression on Liu’s face and the veins popping out of his neck were really great, but didn’t warrant it being above the fold. The photo of the ROTC color guard above the fold draws the view in nicely with the flagpoles and shows the intense respect and duty the students have for the flags they are responsible for. I liked this aspect.
Also, I made the decision based on the news value of the photo. At the Hatchet, we do little to address a fairly large group of students on our campus (ROTC), and their annual banquet was a good opportunity to expose this community.
Please keep writing.
Cheers.
