A kitchen on the second floor of Mitchell Hall caught fire Tuesday evening, eyewitness said, causing the evacuation of the residence hall for over an hour.
“They hooked up hoses and were actually running, which they don’t usually do,” freshman Lianna DeBor said. “I was freaked out.”
Freshman Youssef Bishara said he walked out of his second floor room and saw smoke coming from the floor’s communal kitchen.
“There was lots of smoke everywhere,” Bishara said. “There were people in the kitchen, too.”
Students were allowed back in the building at around 11 p.m, but the second floor kitchen remains closed off by caution tape, with visible signs of black burn marks at the top of the door.
Both University Police and D.C. Fire Officials were unable to comment on the scene, the D.C. Fire Public Information Office did not return requests for comment Tuesday night.
