The stars of TLC’s “Sister Wives” have hired GW Law School professor Jonathan Turley to represent them if they are brought up on polygamy charges, according to a news report.

The TLC show, which chronicles the lives of fundamentalist Mormon Kody Brown and his three wives, premiered last month. The Utah family has since come under investigation by authorities for their marital status and living arrangements.

Turley, a constitutional law expert, told TMZ that he is prepared to go to the Utah County Attorney to make a case for why the Brown family should not be prosecuted. According to TMZ, Turley said the state almost never prosecutes for polygamy unless there is evidence of child abuse or other crimes, which he said there is not.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, polygamy is a third-degree felony in Utah and can carry a penalty of up to five years in prison.
